Golf in Auckland

Auckland boasts a number of fine golf courses, from municipal to championship standard, with 20+ within an hour`s drive of Auckland Airport, making them ideal for long weekend breaks.

The Grange Golf Club
Located in Manukau City, within easy reach of Auckland Airport (in the city`s western suburb of Mangere), the Grange Golf Club features a championship standard golf course. Measuring 6,543 yards from the blue tees and 6,288 yards from the white boxes, with a par of 70, it also offers a par-72, 5,864 yards ladies` course, making it suitable for players of both sexes and a range of abilities. Generally considered one of New Zealand`s best courses, it provides many interesting golfing challenges, accompanied by first-rate facilities.

Formosa Golf Resort
Situated within 35 minutes of Auckland Airport, the golf course at the Formosa Resort was designed by Bob Charles, who used Augusta National as his template. At a formidable 7,315 yards from the Pro tees, it is the longest course in New Zealand. However, with three other sets of tees, ranging from 6,745 yards to 5680 yards, plus a 4,635 yard ladies` course, it can provide enjoyment for golfers of all standards. The majority of its tree-lined holes feature picturesque views of the Hauraki Gulf, while the panorama from the cliff tops of the 11th to 16th holes features Waiheke Island, Rangitoto and the Coromandel peninsula.

Gulf Harbour Country Club
Located on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, north of Auckland, the Gulf Harbour course twists and turns through indigenous grasses and plant life. Ocean vistas and an undulating landscape combine for an exhilarating golfing encounter. The par-72 course measures an intimidating 7,050 yards from the back tees, but other sets of tees, ranging from 6,500 yards to 5800 yards, along with a 5,200 yard ladies` course ensure its suitability for players of every calibre. Gulf Harbour tests course management skills with a diversity of stimulating holes offering a number of risk / reward prospects. The closing holes are particularly electrifying. The approach to the par-4 16th requires both skill and guts, flirting with rock cliffs. The par-5 17th runs alongside the ocean, with distractingly beautiful views, while the 18th is a 420 yard par 4 which turns inland towards home.

South Head Golf Club
The scenic South Head course was opened in 1969 and is built on the sandy, free draining soil of the South Kaipara Peninsula. Designed by Jack Eccles, the course features undulating Kikuyu grass fairways and greens that utilise the full potential of the natural contours. With stunning views over Kaipara Harbour, it provides a true test to golfers of all abilities. The removal of a large number of pine trees has made the course even more enjoyable and the views more impressive.

Muriwai Golf Club
Muriwai is unique in the area as a true links course. The par-72, 6,800 yards course is in a state of perpetual flux, due to the erosion of the coastal dunes by the mighty Tasman Sea. The back 9 demands accuracy with small greens and strategically placed hazards. The challenging greens, coupled with unpredictable cross winds, make for a pleasurable golfing experience.

Golfers travelling with their clubs, particularly on long haul flights such as those to Australia should invest in high-quality golf travel bags to prevent damage to precious equipment.
